Drug bust

POLICE have seized $5 million worth of cannabis in a major drug squad operation on the Far North Coast.

Strike Force Farrelly comprised detectives from the State Crime Command Drug Squad, the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, the NSW Police Air Wing, the Dog Squad and the Radio Electronics Unit.

The cannabis eradication program targeted Burringbar, Murwillumbah, Mullumbimby, Uki and surrounding national parks over five days last week.

Almost 2450 plants ranging in height from one to five metres were seized and police have charged four men with drug cultivation.

After last week's drug bust, dealers in and around Bowling Green should be put on notice that it is not a matter of if they will be caught, but a matter of when.

Last week, nine people were arrested in what authorities are describing as a "major" marijuana trafficking syndicate in southcentral Kentucky. Two of the men allegedly involved in this ring were stopped and arrested in Oklahoma after authorities there found 295 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle.

The arrests come after an 18-month investigation by the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force with assistance from the Bureau of AH Handags Replica Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Bowling Green Police Department, the Columbia KSP/HIDTA Drug Task Force, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Kentucky State Police, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement and Warren County Sheriff's Office. THE number of coal ships lined up off Mackay's coast has decreased by almost 30 per cent since November, however, this could be good news for our economy.

Sixty-three coal ships were waiting to be loaded at Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal and Hay Point Coal Terminal yesterday - significantly less than the 90 queued in November.

Queensland Resources Council acting chief Field & Stream Watches executive Greg Lane said increasing business confidence among Queensland's long-term customers could have contributed to the reduction in coal ship queues.

This is because ship movements of long-term customers and contracts are being planned well in advance, helping to alleviate the queue.

"China's surge into the spot market for coking coal and new demand from India increased ship queues in 2009 but also helped Queensland ride out a drop in demand from traditional customers resulting from the global financial crisis," Mr Lane said.

"While China and India are continuing to record very strong growth, Japan and other traditional markets in Asia are also showing signs of recovery and that is a strong pointer to exports in 2010 outstripping 2009 levels."

Last financial year, Queensland exported a record 159 million tonnes of coal, and throughput in the September 2009 quarter reached a record 73 million tonnes.

"However, there are still many challenges ahead for Queensland if it is to take full advantage of what could shape up as another 'super-cycle' of minerals and energy demand growth," Mr Lane said.

"Ongoing EDOX Fake industry concern over the under-performance of the state's rail system is being heightened by the State Government's proposal to float QR's (Queensland Rail's) coal rail services as a vertically integrated business, rather than one more closely aligned to the long-term growth of the coal industry and Central Queensland communities.

Others will drop out because they landed a bigger part. higher paying gig. or lost interest in being involved making a smaller budget movie.
