Students bid farewell to Harri

A year of uncertainty, confusion and frustration for those at Harrison Middle School ended on a celebratory note yesterday.

Hundreds of students, staff and parents crammed into the school's gymnasium yesterday morning for its final students awards day and volunteer recognition before Harrison closes for good next week.

Students of the 50-year-old school are being repatriated to either Green Acres or George Fitton schools next year to allow for a single-track French immersion program to be housed there.

And though this final week of school activities have marked a bittersweet farewell Chloe Replica for students and staff -- some of whom may never see each other again -- everyone at Harrison can say goodbye with their heads held high, principal Chad Cobbe says.

"This year has left a legacy," Cobbe told the gathered assembly yesterday morning. "It hasn't been a flame that simply burned out. It has, indeed, left a legacy. I thank the staff, the students and the entire community for coming together to make that happen."

Student Melanie Wallace, along with her friends Jael Unger and Emma Donnelly, gave a farewell address to the school on behalf their graduating Grade 8 class.

Wallace says while she's looking forward to starting classes at Vincent Massey High School in the fall, she'll always look back at her time at Harrison with fond memories.

"The teachers made us friends with them, they made us comfortable," she said. "We had lots of fun with all the activities that we had ... all the dances and good friends."

Lisa Gorowski, who has taught Grades 7 and 8 at Harrison for the past eight years, says the reality of the end of Harrison's era didn't truly hit her until a few weeks ago.

"It didn't really hit home until the last few weeks, when (we) were starting to pack ... but change is OK. I know everybody's going to be all right and the kids are going to be good. Everybody will adjust."

Staff and students of Green Acres, George Fitton and New Era schools also celebrated their last day of the educational year yesterday, as each of those buildings is being affected by the creation of the all-French school.
