Neighbours from hell; LETTERS

'PROBLEM families' won't be exactly quaking in their shoes at what Gordon Brown is planning to do to them. As a social housing worker for 37 years, I dealt with families of this sort, who relished the suffering they could inflict on their neighbours. It gave them a sense of identity, acting big and controlling the neighbourhood.

They hold all-night parties which go on for days and live on benefits paid for by the working population whom they disturb and simply don't care about. Anyone who tells them how to behave is simply told to 'Foxtrot Oscar'.

But it's one thing for Gordon Brown to say he's going to do something about this and entirely another thing actually trying to do it. If we evict problem families, we have to pick them up again under the Homelessness Act.

If we deem them to have made themselves intentionally homeless and don't pick them up, it turns out we have breached their human rights by not rehousing them. Where can we rehouse them? What community wants such tenants? To take them to court, you have to make your accusations stick. If they don't stick and the case falls apart, the problem family will inflict even more pain and suffering on those who tried to get something done about them. And they will now feel fireproof.

Gordon Brown is running scared of this issue because it has been swept under the carpet for years.
